Fakultas Teologi UKAW berdiri pada: 08 Februari 1971 dengan nama Akademi Theologia Kupang (AThK). Lembaga ini didirikan oleh Gereja Masehi Injili di Timor (GMIT) dan Gereja Kristen Sumba (GKS) untuk mendidik para calon pelayan (pendeta) bagi kebutuhan pelayanan di kedua gereja tersebut.
